Barrackpore a beautiful city located in North of Kolkata has deep connection with Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. It is here that first banner of revolt against British Raj were raised. The town came into limelight when Mangal Pandey, a soldier in the Bengal Army’s 34th native infantry rose in rebellion against the British and hurt two army officers. He was later arrested and hanged for his misconduct. Besides this Barrackpore has many other historic building which is a delight for a tourist visiting this place. Mangal Pandey Park in Barrackpore

This park has been dedicated to the famous freedom fighter, Mangal Pandey. He was a soldier in Barrackpore cantonment who rose in rebellion against the Britsh. He ended up wounding two British officers with his musket and sword. He was thus court martialled and hung to death on April 8, 1857. This park also has a statue of Mangal pandey and a memorial dedicated to him in the park. There is a small baby elephant statue raising his trunk in mark of respect in front of Mangal Pandey's statue.

Jawaharkunja Garden in Barrackpore

This garden is located before the Gandhi ghat and is popular as a picnic spot. This garden is maintained by the Government of West Bengal Directorate of Forests and is filled with variety of flowers with a small pond in the centre. You can have a good and leisure time with your family in this park.

Nishan Ghat in Barrackpore

The East India Company built this ghat for the purpose Governor General. His other guests and senior people of the Company also visited this ghat. The Mangal Pandey Park lies very close to this ghat.

Dhobhi Ghat in Barrackpore

This was another ghat built around the residing place of the dhobis in olden times. The dhobis used to wash their clothes at this ghat. However, in the present day, this place is used to ferry people across to Serampore.

The Gandhi memorial is located on this ghat. A certain portion of this ghat also has the ashes of the Mahatma Gandhi. The walls here are filled with murals depicting the entire work of Gandhi. The Ghat provides a picturesque view of River Ganga and the breeze blowing in here will rejuvenate you. All you can experience at this ghat is serenity and calmness.

Gandhi Museum in Barrackpore

This museum has a collection of all of Mahatama Gandhi works which includes around 12000 books and 28,000 letters written by him. This musuem was formed in 1961 and is situated on Riverside Road about 3 kms away from Barrackpore Rail Station. You can also find huge variety of photographs here along with some press clippings, bulletins and tape recordings pertaining to the life of the Mahatma. This musuem also has a 81 feet painting in mural made by Professor Dhirendra Nath Brahma. This mural is an unbelievable piece of art. It also has a big Library which is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Wednesday.

Bartholomew Cathedral in Barrackpore

This church is located close to the Governor’s house. It was built in the earlier times for the English gentlemen and their soldiers. However, this is not the the only church Barrackpore has. Kali Temple in Barrackpore

This temple is located near the RCTC area of Barrackpore. This temple is more than 7 centuries old and is built near a pond. It has a idol of Kali mata and it is said that the Soldiers used to pray in this temple before planning any action for the freedom movement.

This historic buildings was built during year 1863 - 1865 during the reign of the British. This used to the private secretary's bunglow. However, post independence it was transformed and was handed over to the governor as a weekend retreat. The house got its name from the flagstaff built nearby between 1863 and 1865.
